Top 5 World Cup Records

Football fever is gripping the country once again as Roy Hodgson’s England team head to South America for a FIFA World Cup adventure in Brazil. That surely means beer, banter – and probably more heartache after a typically nail-biting penalty-shoot defeat to one of the old rivals such as Germany, Italy or Argentina.

But before all that there’s bound to be some joyous celebrations as England give us all reason to hope, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to impress your mates with these Top 5 World Cup Records. We’ve helpfully (or some might say craftily) combined your footy trivia with some classic World Cup-themed items from our summer menswear range, so you can both talk the talk and walk the walk during World Cup 2014! So without further ado, here’s ‘the knowledge’…

World Cup Record 1: Germany’s Lothar Mattaus holds the all-time World Cup finals appearance record of 25, playing in all five tournaments between 1982 and 1998. England’s legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton holds the Three Lions’ record with 17 appearances in the finals.

World Cup Record 2: In 2002, Turkey striker Hakan Sukur scored the quickest ever goal in a World Cup finals. Sukur put  his country 1-0 ahead against joint-hosts South Korea after just 11 seconds of the Third Place Play-Off match at the finals in Asia. England’s fastest World Cup finals goal was scored by Bryan Robson after 27 seconds of a 3-1 group match win against France in 1982.

World Cup Record 3: Northern Ireland and Manchester United star Norman Whiteside holds the record for the youngest player to appear in a  World Cup finals match, aged just 17 years and 41 days when he played against Yugoslavia at the 1982 tournament.

Luke 1977 Teller Shorts

These comfortable Luke 1977 Teller Shorts are on sale at a bargain £35, having been reduced by 50%. They’re perfect for kicking back with a cold pint and watching the World Cup drama unfold with your country folk.

World Cup Record 4: Russia’s  Oleg Salenko secured his place in the history books with the most goals in a World Cup finals match. The Leningrad-born striker scored all five of Russia’s goals in a 6-1 group-stage victory over Cameroon during World Cup’94 in the United States. (Bonus record: In the same game, Cameroon’s Roger Milla became the the oldest player to feature in a World Cup finals match, aged 42). Bizarrely for Salenko, it was his last ever international appearance for Russia – but what a way to bow out, gaining the Golden Boot as tournament joint-top scorer!

Havaianas Brasil Logo Flip Flops

Brasil Logo Flip Flops by Havaianas

These World-Cup themed Havaianas Brasil Logo Flip Flops are way too cool to miss, especially at just £20 a pair. They come in 8 colours (sky blue, marine blue, navy blue, blue, yellow, black, white and dark brown) to suit any style. Even the editor wants a pair – staff discount of course!

World Cup Record 5: 2014 tournament hosts Brazil hold the record for most World Cup final triumphs, winning the world’s biggest international football prize on five occasions – in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. After 48 years of hurt, England fans on both sides of the equator will be hoping, if not actually expecting, to bring the famous trophy home for the first time since 1966…

With special thanks to the good people at FIFA for confirming information – and now that you have ‘the knowledge’ why not be the first to share it with your mates on Twitter or Facebook!
